How to Survive Commuting in the Valley

Sure, metro Phoenix might not be the worst city in the United States for commute times. Valley residents average around 11.4 miles for their commute, according to a report by the Brookings Institute. But if you’ve been stuck in rush hour for even a few miles, you know how easily it can wear on you.

Here are some ways to survive commuting in the Valley:

Beat the Stress

If you can’t avoid a long commute in the car, there are opportunities available to help make the most of your drive:

  • Make it entertaining: Improve your mood by playing relaxing music or a fun podcast
  • Learn something: Catch up on the news or listen to an interesting audiobook
  • Pep talk: Set goals for the day, meditate or plan out an upcoming event or project
  • Give up the battle: Accept that you can’t control the unexpected; don’t waste your energy being upset about an accident up ahead or construction delays
  • Offset with activity: Once you get to work, spend a few minutes walking, stretching or taking deep breaths to offset any stress from your morning commute

Mix Up Your Mode

Phoenix offers many different commuting options, and utilizing public transportation during rush hour can even reduce your travel time. Travel throughout the area via light rail, buses, or find someone to carpool with. Corinne Holliday from Valley Metro says, “With more than 38,000 active users on the ShareTheRide.com matching system, a commute solution is available to almost anyone. In 2016, you can get more ‘me’ time while helping improve the environment.”

Using public transportation or ridesharing enables you to be productive while traveling to and from the workplace. Get a jumpstart on responding to emails, or read a good book. Also, can you bike or walk safely to your bus or light rail stop instead of driving? Staying active can give you more energy to get through your day and tackle big projects.

Don’t deal with a stressful drive anymore! No matter how long your commute is or which method of transportation you use, there are several ways you can improve your commuting experience. Once you implement ways to enhance your daily drive, you can be more positive and productive at work.
