May 2nd – 6th was Teacher Appreciation Week. A week where we all had a chance to reflect on the teachers and mentors who guided us along the way to where we are today.
Today there is great demand for talented professionals to join the ranks of teachers and we want to cover some reasons you might want to become a teacher.
More than just summers off
Teaching is a role that allows you to have a tremendous impact on the lives of students every day. So even though having those summers free may seem like a really great perk, they come with the responsibility of molding the life of a person, providing inspiration, and being a good example.
Be in demand
Jobs in education, not just teaching positions, are available everywhere. Once you have met the requirements to become a teacher, you have access to jobs and the flexibility to get them at locations across the country. Other positions in education include administrators, coaches, instruction designers, nutrition services, and teacher’s aides.
To stay young
Being surrounded by energized young minds is a great way to keep your attitude and approach to life fresh. You’ll be amazed by the creativity and spirit that your students will share with you.
To make a difference
Many teachers cite this reason as the top one that made them become and stay a teacher. You can see the impact you make daily as a student’s understanding of a subject grows; and you’ll have the knowledge that you’ve impacted a person for life. Teachers can inspire students to become scientists, artists, and doctors by igniting passions for subjects early in their education.
To learn more
You never know a subject better than when you have to teach it. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of specific topics and the world overall. Teaching inspires you to become a curious, life-long learner.
Variety
No two days are the same when you are a teacher. From the excitement of the first day in fall, through the tough days of big tests, and fun days of play, you’ll get to experience a wide range of characters, subjects and tasks. If you hate routine, teaching could be a good option for you.
To have a calling
Teaching requires a high level of dedication, usually above and beyond what a different type of job would demand. People that want to have a vocation and not just a job, often feel drawn to teaching. With its far-reaching impact and sometimes long hours, teaching requires dedication.
Face-to-face time
If anyone has described you as a people person, an extrovert, or a social butterfly, teaching provides a great outlet for people that want a high level of contact with others. Students, other faculty, parents, and community members all provide teachers with ample time to energize themselves through interaction.
If you are a teacher or educator thank you for your hard work and dedication. You make a substantial difference in the lives of everyone you teach.
